About the one major down-side of being a Snap Internet customer is that I've got no way of keeping track of Usenet any more. Every now and then I wonder how the old gang at a.b.m-l and s.c.n-z are getting on...

Can you not use google groups to access news groups?

eg http://groups.google.com/group/soc.culture.new-zealand/

Horrible interface and no obvious (to me) way of kill-filing the spammers makes Google fairly much a non goer as far as reading Usenet goes (you may have noticed that most of the first page of that Google list was spam, some of it from the infamous William Grosvenor). Back before Vodaphone took over IHUG and let its Usenet service die through neglect, I was using Outlook Express to read news. Unfortunately doing so requires my ISP to actually have a news service, which as far as I can tell Snap does not.

So you basically want a news server which carries those newsgroups.

Do any of these news servers work for you?
