Doctor Who night [Nov. 22nd, 2015|09:11 pm]

Strong story tonight, but without a great lot in the dialogue that's quotable.

"Oh, that's not boring. That's very... not boring."

"You're going to save me. You're the Doctor. That's what you do."

So, Clara is hanging half in, half out of the TARDIS while it is flying over London. Where is OSH?

"She enjoyed that ... way too much."

"Name, species and reason for asylum?"

"Infinite lifespan, finite memory."

"Still saving the world from me?" "It's still here, isn't it?"

"When I look at you, I can't tell your past from your future, and there's so very much of both."

"The Doctor is no longer here! You are stuck with me!"

"I'd strongly advise you to keep out of my way. You'll find it's a very small universe when I'm angry with you."

... And so Clara's out of the series for, basically, being too bloody smart for her own good. Being too bloody smart for her own good isn't exactly out of character... but this was still rather a surprise.

{raise eyebrows} How long-term out of the series is Clara? Because she seems popular enough with you and my other Whovian friends, I'm surprised if this is a permanent development. {wink, Smile}

She's permanently out of the series. Jenna Coleman's contracted until the end of this season (which I think is the epsiode after tonight's - or possibly two episodes after it) but she won't show up except in flashbacks, or as someone else who just happens to be similar to Clara (that was actually a bit of a plot point and a mystery during her first year on the show). She's been with the show three years now, which puts her well up in the ranks of long-timers.

I'm actually a bit ambivalent toward Clara as the Doctor's companion. It's not that there was anything wrong with her as a person (and Jenna Coleman's acting was very good), it's just that I didn't see her personality as a good fit for the Doctor - particularly the new Doctor. Clara's main failing was being too smart for her own good and not careful enough, and the new Doctor seems to be emotionally... not vulnerable, but just needing people to be straight with him, especially when he was new in the job (it's a bit of a tradition that the Doctor is a bit immature straight after a regeneration).
