wolf by moonlight

Things still aren't working

I'm beginning to completely lose patience with this wretched box.

For the last several months now, it's been randomly cutting out (losing everything I've been working on, and occasionally losing whole files and email folders).

I've been checking the event viewer, which always tells me "The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. [copious quantities of technobabble]".

These times are random - ones shown in my event log (which only goes back three months) are: 22/12/2009 11:52:17 p.m., 26/12/2009 7:24:59 p.m., 24/01/2010 9:44:55 a.m., 13/02/2010 9:39:50 a.m., 17/02/2010 11:23:18 p.m., 27/02/2010 11:21:37 p.m., 10/03/2010 8:00:34 a.m., 10/03/2010 9:03:46 p.m., 12/03/2010 1:44:37 a.m., and 18/03/2010 9:52:42 p.m.

It's been in to be fixed numerous times (for up to ten days at a stretch) and nobody can figure out what's wrong with it.

So this is about my last try before I start getting obnoxious with computer shops and demanding money back for the computer parts they put in it recently (the computer itself is well out of warranty but much of its innards are less than a year old). Basically: what the farnarkle is a "bug check" and how do I stop the damn thing shutting down because of them?

There's a lot of work I want to get done - web site updates, finishing sucking data off an ancient (1980s) machine, installing Ubuntu onto an old drive, swapping over the monitor with one of those newfangled LCD monitors - but I'm wary of doing too much with a computer which appears to be on its last legs.
