A freshly fallen silent shroud of WHAT THE HELL, WEATHER? [Sep. 18th, 2010|11:11 am]

It's September. As in, (allegedly) Spring. So why has the weather waited until now to cover Invercargill with about six inches of snow (and still coming down)?

With any luck this won't be like the Big Snow of 1996 which settled for days, leaving some roads (and, more particularly, my driveway) covered with black ice...

Early Afternoon Update: Roads are passable with care (for values of "care" which include "old-ish Subaru wagon with all-wheel-drive and low-ratio").

A roof has collapsed at Stadium Southland.

As I've told one of my friends, it's getting to the state that I want to start playing Natural Disaster Bingo.

Mid Afternoon Update: After a couple of hours' break it has started snowing again. Aerial footage from about two blocks away from me.

The fellow on the news said that snow falls like this happen every 15 or so years, which made me wonder why they didn't account for that when building the Stadium.

It was built under the 1992 (or 1993? Some time around then anyway) Building Act, the same piece of legislation which got the country into all that weathertight homes fiasco.

I bet the engineer who did the calculations for the roof is going to be rather hard to track down...
