Well that went rather well

Writing workshop yesterday went quite well, although most of the people there were more serious about their writing than I am about mine. I mainly listened while the other writers talked and read... I'm glad I did, because a few of the other writers are youngsters who are already showing quite a bit of talent, and who deserved to get heard. There was one boy there - I'd guess he's about 11 or 12 - who, just on a prompt, came up with a story start that was quite interesting, and a concept to back it up that could make a really good action/thriller/psychological horror type epic if he keeps on working at it.

I did take part in the exercises... one of them turned out to be a fairly ordinary "teenaged girl discovers she has low-level magical powers" type plot that is also very derivative, but that I might type out as far as it went just to have a record of it in case anything of interest can be salvaged from it and used elsewhere. The other one turned up (after about a page of nothing in particular) some sort of ecological horror type plot that... I don't think I've ever seen that exact plot be done before... but that I don't think I've got the ability to pull off without it turning out the wrong sort of creepy (there are a number of pitfalls I'll have to avoid). I'll try to keep on working at it and see how far I get.
