Shortly after the release of Conflicting Emotions, Tim Finn, the band's last remaining founding member, decided to leave and carry on with his solo career. This left the remaining four, plus new drummer Paul Hester, to look for a new direction. Eventually they decided to wind up the band for good, and release a mini-album's worth of material which had been written up to that point. By the time that See Ya Round was released, it had grown into a full-length album with all the variety one would expect from any other Split Enz album.

Years Go By was fairly much a Neil Finn song, strengthened with contributions from keyboardist Eddie Rayner (thanks to a rarities compilation, some parts of it can be traced back to a previously abandoned song Mr. Catalyst). This time, all we get is the album cover on the video (the space invaders game seems to have stuck with songs from the previous album).
