Sometimes, having an antique computer in the old study is worth it.
Ring ring, ring ring.

"Hello there. I'm from 35 Technical calling you about your computer."

"What about it?"

"You are running Windows."

"No, I'm running CP/M."

"I'm running CP/M."

"What does it stand for?"

"It's the operating system I run on my computer. It's an old computer."

"What's its full name?"

"It's CP/M-68K, running on a 1984 SORD M68."

"You don't have a computer. You're telling me a lie!"

Poor little scammer... not.

{LAUGH} That scammer got nothing he didn't deserve. {REALLY BIG GRIN}

Dad likes to ask scammers to tell him what brand of computer he has. It's locally built, so it's not a common brand. They've never succeeded yet. {not-quite-nice SMILE}

Why do scammers want to know what OS you're running? I'm baffled.

(Oddly, not baffled by the CP/M reference. But why would any scam work on a Windows owner and not on some other OS owner?)

It's a fairly well known scam over here. There's a page on it at Snopes http://www.snopes.com/fraud/telephone/microsoft.asp

... and I think that what upset him (the "click" was him hanging up on me) was that he would have had a set script to read with variants on 'acceptable' responses and mine were so out-of-left-field that his script couldn't help him...

I had similar experience with a chap a few years ago when I was still using the DR-DOS box and my browser was called Arachne. Poor chap couldn't get his head round it!
